All foods can fit into a healthy diet. It’s about balance. My focus for feeding my family has 3 main nutritional goals:
1. increase fruits and vegetables
2. increase the amount of whole grains
3. three daily servings of dairy foods (or a high calcium substitute).
Many chronic health problems including heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, and osteoporosis can be prevented with a diet resembling these goals. These dietary principles track the recommendations of MyPlate, the Department of Agriculture’s new food icon. MyPlate replaced the food pyramid in June 2011.
