We’ve already enjoyed twenty days of this special month. Besides being the first month of summer vacation, it’s also designated ‘Dairy Month’. This gives us a chance to celebrate the health benefits of dairy, the taste of dairy, and the farmers who produce it. Recently, I visited a dairy farm in Missouri, the Heins Family Farm (where I snapped this photo of the newborn calf). On my visit, I learned about the great care taken to give each animal a healthy, comfortable life so they can produce nutrient-rich milk for all of us. I also learned that it takes less than 48 hours for milk to travel from the farm to the grocery store. That’s FRESH!
Milk is the number one food source for three of the four nutrients that the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans identified as lacking in our diets- calcium, vitamin D, and potassium. It would be easy to close this nutrient gap if we consumed all three of the recommended servings, but, unfortunately, most of us only consume 2 dairy servings daily. An added glass of cold milk, a cup of yogurt or an ounce of cheese is all it takes to meet daily needs. And Myplate2yours boasts some great tasting recipes with significant sources of dairy including: Green Apple-Cucumber Smoothie, Cottage Cheese Pancakes, Barley & Apple Breakfast Bake, and Creamy Avocado Soup.
Celebrate June Dairy Month at dinner tonight by raising your milk glasses with your family… ‘Here’s to FRESH nutrition and GREAT taste’!
